Craftyism book review - DIY Watercolor Flowers by Marie Boudon | Title

Watercolours are so popular right now, but they can be tricky to use. Luckily I’ve been reading a great how-to book; DIY Watercolor Flowers by Marie Boudon. Marie has an amazingly colourful blog all about watercolours and how to use them however, it’s in French. Luckily for me, her book also has an English version!

What’s it about?:

In the introduction, Marie says; ‘This book is for people who, like me, love modern, vibrant and spontaneous watercolors and are hypnotized by the beautiful colors and textures of flowers’

The book has chapters on how to use watercolours, how to digitize your work, how to paint different flowers and foliage and finally, how to create a flower composition and bouquets.

I decided to start by trying out some of the simple flowers and foliage. The instructions in DIY Watercolor Flowers are very easy to follow. I like how they encourage you to find your own style by practising and not simply copying. From my small experiment, I can see how you can easily spend whole days practicing just one flower or leaf and not get bored!

Final thoughts:

DIY Watercolor Flowers is a beautifully colourful book. Best of all it’s also useful and informative! For the beginner there’s help on what supplies to buy and how to gain confidence with them. More confident painters will enjoy the tips on colour mixing and composition. Marie Boudon is a great teacher and the images of her artwork are very inspiring. If you’re looking to paint modern, colourful watercolours I definitely recommend you get a copy of DIY Watercolor Flowers by Marie Boudon!

In contrast to watercolours, you can also use acrylics to create colourful, modern images. I enjoyed Folk Art Fusion: Americana by Joy Laforme for help with this!

I was loaned a digital copy of this book to review by the publishers. All thoughts and opinions are my own!
